The decision to embark upon contested court proceedings in divorce always has to be measured against the likely risks and legal costs. Here's an example of where a separated couple have become entrenched in highly acrimonious court proceedings and the legal costs are spiralling. The press have reported that the chairman of Laura Ashley and his wife have so far incurred legal costs of no fewer than £5 million in their long running divorce battle, mostly arguing whether their divorce should be resolved under English or Malaysian law. This is before they have even got as far as deciding who keeps what out of the finances. It will be interesting to see what the grand total will be at the end of this process if matters continue on their current trajectory!
